FAQ

What are the benefits of laying Sod?

Sod grass creates one of the best surfaces that nature can provide. It's clean & soft, and also one of the safest surfaces for sporting play, children and pets. The advantage of sodding is that it's the fastest, easiest and superior way to quickly establish a lawn because the sod grass is already mature and tough. Sod is easy to work with and an average size yard can be installed in just a few hours at a very affordable cost. Seeding, though initially less expensive, is very vulnerable to erosion, wind, rain washout, birds & squirrels, and other factors which can ruin the outcome. Our sod will take root in your yard, sports field or park in about two weeks, and will be ready for rough play and traffic within a few weeks. It can be installed any time that the ground is not frozen. Mature sod will immediately control erosion once installed, and will help stabilize steep hills and slopes.

In the heat of summer, a sod lawn will typically be about 30 degrees cooler than asphalt & rock, and 15 degrees cooler than bare soil. This will help cool your yard so you can enjoy it more, and will help with home cooling costs as well. On average the front lawns of 7-8 homes have the cooling effect of about 75 tons of air conditioning in hot weather.

Another great reason for using sod is its natural filtration ability. Turf grass actually filters dust, dirt and other particles from your environment. It also helps eliminate mud from being tracked into your home. Turf lawn will absorb carbon dioxide, release fresh oxygen, and filter/muffle noise.

Turf sod grass also adds value to your home. Landscaped yard can add as much as 15% to the re-sale value of your home.

Laying Sod vs. Seeding. Which is better?

Sod provides a homeowner with an instant lawn, and that is hard to beat. It does require steady maintenance after installation, and initially the watering schedule is important to adhere to. New sod must be kept watered daily for the first couple of weeks, and foot traffic should be kept to a minimum. Prior to installation, the ground needs to be raked and leveled, and all weeds removed. In Colorado we often have clay or hard soils, so it’s good to add compost or top soil before laying the sod. Sod is slightly more expensive than grass seed, and it’s important to install it on the day it is cut for best results.

A homeowner can prepare and plant grass seed his or her own lawn, but factors such as high winds, birds and squirrels can affect the uniform look when the seeds finally sprout. Food traffic must be strictly limited until the grass is at least two inches tall. Seeded lawns grow best in the north, where there are hot summers and cold winters. Seeded lawns must be watered frequently, but not deeply, to keep the seed moist during germination.

If you seed your lawn and it rains, the germination pattern can end up being quite irregular, and you may need to over-seed several times. Typically it takes about 2-3 years for the grass seed to mature into a beautiful lawn. Never purchase a few squares of sod from a large home and garden store, because there is a great chance that it has been sitting for more than a day, and may or may not root well. Sod works well for homeowners in either the north or the south—areas with cold winters and hot summers, or areas with mild winters and hot summers.

What Type of Sod does Kremer's Turf Sell?

Our Sod is a mix of four different types of Kentucky Bluegrass, a mix which is specifically designed for Colorado climates. It is a hearty thick Bluegrass, great for kids and pets. Homeowners love it because it is draught and disease tolerant, and shade resistant. It's also great for sports playing field turf and parks because of its strength and durability.

How Large is a Roll of Sod?

Our Sod rolls are 2 feet by 5 feet; each roll being 10 square feet. Our harvester machine can also cut "big rolls" which can be much larger and wider in size, depending on the requirements of your turf sod job.

How much Sod fits into a Truck or Trailer?

Usually you can fit about 40-50 rolls into the bed of a half-ton pickup truck, and about 80-90 rolls into a three-quarter ton pickup truck with a long bed. Trailer load capacities will vary based on the size and suggested weight loads; check your owner's guide or talk to you trailer leasing agent for recommended payload capacities.

Do Customers Have To Pick Up All Of Their Sod At Once?

Kremer's customers may make as many trips as they need to get the job done. Our main concern is your safety when you are transporting the Sod that you pick up from our Farm. Pay for the sod in full, and we will make a note on your invoice how much you take each time, and we will professionally load your vehicle for you.

What is the weight of a Roll of Sod?

Normally each roll weighs about 35 to 40 pounds, although that weight can vary depending on moisture content from rainfall.

How many Rolls of Sod are on a Pallet?

Each pallet of Turf sod holds 540 square feet of lawn sod, which is exactly 54 rolls of sod.

What is the weight of a Pallet of Sod?

Each Pallet of Turf Sod weighs about 2,000 pounds, although that weight can vary depending on moisture content from rainfall.

Is the Sod from Kremer's Turf freshly cut?

We cut our Sod fresh for every customer, every day! On pick up orders, just let us know when you'll be arriving and we will cut it fresh immediately before you arrive.

Does Kremer's Turf deliver Sod?

Absolutely. We deliver our Sod using large semi trucks equipped with forklifts, so we can place each stack of Sod rolls exactly where you need it for installation. Our delivery fees are very reasonable; please call us for delivery pricing.

How difficult is it to install the Sod myself?

Installing rolls of turf sod is fairly easy to do and can be a lot of fun. Basically, the sod rolls are unrolled in the same direction each time, butted tightly up against each other so there is no overlap or gap, and staggered as if laying bricks on a horizontal surface: the result is a beautiful green lawn that you can enjoy immediately.

How much Sod should I order for my yard?

The best way is to determine the quantity you'll need in square feet. To determine that amount, use the simple formulas and examples for common shapes which are located in the "Measurements" section of our web site.

I ordered 1,000 square feet and finished doing my own install. If there's any Sod left over do I get a refund?

Sometimes this happens, especially when the surface to be covered with Turf Sod is an unusual shape, which effects measurement. In those rare events, we realize that there can be sod left over. Because of its perishable nature, we cannot come and pick it up, nor can we give you a refund for it. Sod is perishable plant material, and we cannot re-plant it or sell it to someone else. The positive side of that is knowing that the Sod you purchase at Kremer's Turf is fresh cut only for you: never re-sold, leftovers, or returned product. It is vitally important that accurate measurements are taken because what you order is what you will receive, and it is not returnable. We can't take responsibility for someone else's measurements, math mistakes or incomplete measurements.

Can I have Kremer Install the Sod for me?

Kremer's Turf Farm provides a full range of installation services in addition to Sod delivery. Please call us at 303-659-1982 for more details. We can also help you with information on how to prepare your surface for laying the sod.

What do I have to do to prepare my yard for laying the Sod?

The soils in Colorado are generally of poor quality. To insure a healthy lawn, Kremer's Turf recommends that customers utilize a good organic compost: it should be tilled into soil prior to laying the turf sod. The recommended rate is 2-3 cubic yards of compost per 1000 square feet of area. The process is fairly straightforward: spread the compost evenly over your surface area and roto-till to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. This will improve the composition, texture and quality of the soil, insuring that your new sod firmly roots into your yard surface (which takes about two weeks). After you've tilled the compost into the soil, grade and rake it out so that the surface is smooth, level and ready for sod. The lawn will only perform as well as the soil that is underneath it.

How do you Guarantee your Sod?

We guarantee our sod to be mature, healthy, fresh, and weed & disease free at the time you receive it. It will grow and thrive provided that it is given proper maintenance after installation. If, for any reason, you are not satisfied with the quality of our sod or our services, we will always work with you to satisfy and resolve any problems. We spray our sod fields with pre-emergents: these special formulas will not harm the sod but will insure that no weeds grow in on our sod fields. After a period of two months after installation, we cannot be responsible for weeds that may occur. We also can't be responsible for settling which may occur around foundations, utility lines or other fill areas.

Sod is Perishable! Please lay within 24 hours of receiving your sod! Make sure that when you ordered it, your ground surface is prepared so that you can install it immediately. Sod rolls stacked on a pallet should never be directly covered with a tarp, should be kept in a shaded area, and kept moist with a garden hose. Call us the morning of your delivery (around 8:30am) to get your delivery time window so that you can arrange your schedule to install the sod as soon as it arrives. Make sure your ground preparation is finished prior to your delivery day! Weather is a factor for both delivery and harvest: in the event of a Rain-out, we will work with you to reschedule. Traffic in Denver is also unpredictable, so we cannot guarantee an exact delivery time.

What types of Payment do you accept?

We accept Cash, Money orders, Cashiers check, MasterCard, Visa, and Discover.

When do I fertilize my new Sod, and how?

One of the many advantages from buying Sod direct from the farm is the ongoing care and feeding that we do prior to you getting it from us. We regularly fertilize with high quality mixes and also spray pre-emergents onto our turf: that prevents weeds from sprouting here and when you get it home. Many Sod Farms offer all kinds of lines of fertilizer and other products; we do not. Once your new lawn is installed, you should fertilize it about three times per year. Consult with us or with your favorite garden center for advice on a good commercial fertilizer; we'll advise you based on the time of year you install your sod how to proceed with fertilization. Be sure to read and follow label directions for application methods and water in after the fertilizer is applied.

How should I water my newly installed Sod?

Watering is the single most important step in maintaining a healthy lawn. Begin watering your new lawn within 30 minutes after the installation is completed. A new lawn should be watered for about 20 minutes 2-3 times a day for two weeks. Make sure your new lawn has enough water to survive hot, dry or windy days.

What is the price of Kremer's Sod?

Our pricing is determined based on the extent of products & services that you require. Once you have measured and determined the quantity of turf sod that you need, please call us for pricing on picked up or delivered sod.

When Can I Install Sod?

Turf sod can be installed at any time providing that you can prepare the ground correctly and that we can harvest sod from the field. If the ground is not frozen, proper ground prep can be performed. Water must be available to water the newly installed sod, so have a hose ready or utilize your sprinkler system.
